the bad news first: despite our campaign to get our subscribers to reduce their use of bandwidth, our system is in the process of being overwhelmed.Even with the threat of charging for overage, usage is up, and as a board and a society we need to do two things at the same time: reduce demand and increase the capacity of the system. The money we will raise by charging for overage will help offset the costs of purchasing more bandwidth.
At the board meeting held on April 20, it was decided to lessen the impact of overage charges on our subscribers, so here's the good news: the board, after much discussion, decided to lower the overage rate from $3/GB to $2/GB, a substantial decrease. We are going to continue charging for overage for the foreseeable future, so plan accordingly. Our policy as it stands right now is a base rate of $39.95/month which comes with 10 GB usage/month. Over 90% of our subscribers use less bandwidth than that each month. Usage in excess of that will be charged at the rate of $2/GB. We will round up from .6 GB and round down below that (so an overage of 2.5 GB would be billed as 2 GB). Accounts more than $134.00 in arrears will be subject to disconnection.
We make no distinction between residential and commercial customers; everyone will be billed the same way, because usage is usage. If anyone has concerns about our pricing structure, email us at <billing@kaslo.org> (best) or leave a message at 250-353-2305.
